There are times when I believe that curiosity is what initially led the abuser to drugs. The “Black Market” has made drugs available to people of all ages and with a variety of different tastes and interests (Doweiko, 2015). It markets to the young and old and makes the drugs look very attractive and attainable. I remember as a child hearing the phrase, curiosity killed the cat, and I feel this is how a drug user becomes addicted. Experimenting with Alcohol or marijuana is a social norm in the United States and people are confronted to choose or not choose to use drugs (Doweiko, 2015). A person might choose to try drugs to help cope with pain they might be experiencing in their life (Doweiko, 2015). There are times when people want to escape the existence of their own life and try a drug that may give them a temporary euphoric feeling (Doweiko, 2015). Although trying a drug does not mean that one will become addicted it is the first step towards addiction. As stated in May (1988), I feel that people have a desire to know and love God and somehow there is this hole within them, which is that absence of God.  Instead of filling that hole with the love of Christ the abuser fills it with a drug of choice due to past hurts and pains in their life. Individually, I think that as followers of Christ we should accept the drug abuser into the church home as a family member and provide love like Jesus all while encouraging and providing supports and resources. Since the United states consumes 60% of illicit drugs (Doweiko, 2015), I feel it is important to invest the time and money and crack down on the illegal black-market industry by having better boarder control and stiffer penalties on those distributing drugs.
